Mechanism of biological denitrification inhibition: procyanidins induce an allosteric transition of the membrane-bound nitrate reductase through membrane alteration

Abstract: Recently, it has been shown that procyanidins from Fallopia spp. inhibit bacterial denitrification, a phenomenon called biological denitrification inhibition (BDI). However, the mechanisms involved in such a process remain unknown. Here, we investigate the mechanisms of BDI involving procyanidins, using the model strain Pseudomonas brassicacearum NFM 421. The aerobic and anaerobic (denitrification) respiration, cell permeability and cell viability of P. brassicacearum were determined as a function of procyanid… Show more

“…Among the PGPTs, the nitrogen cycle mediated by microbes has been shown to be important in alien plant invasion, such as Fallopia spp. in Europe (Bardon et al, 2014, 2016) and Sorghum halepense in North America (Rout & Chrzanowski, 2009; Rout et al, 2013).…”

“…This implication is important because bifunctional herbicides that can effectively prevent the loss of nitrogen by denitrification as well as control the growth of weed can possibly be developed with a molecular design and bio-rational screening systems [9,10,34]. Thus far to our knowledge, the mechanism and mode of action of biological denitrification inhibition are rarely known, but some reliable reports have been published [35,36].…”

“…(Asian knotweed). This compound has been demonstrated to be an allosteric inhibitor of Pseudomonas brassicacearum nitrate reductase and while it does reduce denitrification in the soil, it has not yet been proven to mitigate N 2 O levels [57]; (6) Microbial bioremediation [88]. The success of N fertilizer management techniques and proper irrigation is largely due to the creation of a microsphere conducive to denitrifying bacteria flourishing [89].…”
