Mechanism and Compatibility of Pretreated Lignocellulosic Biomass and Polymeric Mixed Matrix Membranes: A Review

Abstract: In this paper, a review of the compatibility of polymeric membranes with lignocellulosic biomass is presented. The structure and composition of lignocellulosic biomass which could enhance membrane fabrications are considered. However, strong cell walls and interchain hindrances have limited the commercial-scale applications of raw lignocellulosic biomasses. These shortcomings can be surpassed to improve lignocellulosic biomass applications by using the proposed pretreatment methods, including physical and chem… Show more

“…MMM systems with cellulose extracted from natural sources, such as agro-based materials, have been created by blending it with polymers, carbon, and other materials [ 97 ]. The polymer acts as the continuous phase, while the cellulose functions as the dispersed phase, which can result in a defective morphology if the polymer matrix becomes rigidified.…”

“…Furthermore, Sharma et al [ 26 ] reviewed the application of lignocellulosic biomass-derived nanocellulose for wastewater remediation, with a special focus on the remediation of heavy metals. Amusa et al [ 27 ] also appraised the separation of CO 2 using polymeric mixed matric membranes (MMMs) containing pretreated lignocellulosic biomasses. However, only a few comprehensive reviews in the field of nanocellulose-based membrane technology for the treatment of water and wastewater are presented in the literature [ 28 , 29 , 30 ].…”

“…The permeability controls the movements of the permeating molecules through the membranes. Therefore, composite (mixed matrix) membranes (CMBs) filled some of those loopholes [ 10 , 11 ].…”

“…This is achievable when production optimization and quality improvement of LCB is assured. Recalcitrance effects of lignin can be prevented by adopting adequate pretreatment techniques that ease accessibilities to cellulose and hemicellulose in the LCB [ 10 ]. This will also increase the surface area to volume ratio with less weight, stiffness, and higher strength.…”
