Mechanical Treatment of ZrB2–SiC Powders and Sintered Ceramic Composites Properties

Abstract: The effect of mechanical treatment by planetary ball milling on the properties of hot pressed ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics was studied. It has been shown that material densification after mechanical treatment is finished on initial stages of sintering process. Addition of SiC leads to essentially increasing of sample density up to 99% of a theoretical one for powder with 20% SiC, as compared with ZrB 2 not higher when 76%. It has been shown that all defects which were accumulated during mechanical treatment are anneale… Show more

“…5(a) and 5(b). Such crack deflection and bridging was believed to improve the toughness, attributed to the increasing path length for the crack fracture [12,13]. On the other hand, less crack deflection was apparent in HSBCR-1 and HSBCR-2 samples (Figs.…”

“…By reviewing the developmental progress of ultrahigh temperature boride ceramics, SiC was added as a secondary phase into the ZrB 2 and HfB 2 system to reduce the sintering temperature and suppress the abnormal grain growth due to the pinning effect. Owing to the toughening effects resulting from the crack deflection and crack bifurcation, the fracture toughness of ZrB 2 -SiC and HfB 2 -SiC ceramics could be improved [12][13][14]. A few studies have been performed investigating the addition of SiC into HEB ceramic systems.…”
