V‐belts are commonly used to transmit power between two distant pulleys. Therefore, a strong reinforcement for dimensional stability and thermomechanical properties are essential in power transmission belts. The influence of resorcinol formaldehyde resin (RFL) treated nylon short fibers in EPDM peroxide‐cured formulations was investigated, with concentrations ranging from 0 to 30 parts per hundred rubber (phr) in increments of five. The incorporation of nylon short fibers resulted in improved tensile and mechanical properties in EPDM vulcanizates. Specifically, the tensile stress at 100% elongation increased by 177% to (10.8 MPa), and the improvement in tear strength to 16.2% (75.7 N/mm) was observed. Among other functional requirements in a weak rubber like EPDM, enhanced tear strength is significant for its application in power transmission. Substantial reinforcement between the fiber‐elastomer matrix was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy, as evidenced by increased storage modulus (E′). Notably, there were no considerable effects on the curing rate or low‐temperature properties. Significant improvement in heat stability is observed through thermogravimetric analysis. These enhancements in mechanical and thermal properties might play a role in increased durability and performance in actual V‐ribbed belt applications.Highlights This manuscript describes the effect of treated nylon 66 short fiber on EPDM V‐belt compound. A significant increase in storage modulus, tear strength, and thermal stability. A belt is made using the experimental formulation and it meets the performance requirement. Low fiber content (<15 phr) compounds are unsuitable for dimensional stability. High fiber content (>25 phr) compounds pose processing challenges.

Agricultural waste fiber has huge utilization potential due to its abundant sources, renewability, and low recycling costs. In this process, up to 30 wt% tobacco stalk fiber (TSF) was compounded with high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) and interfacial modifiers using a grinder, melting‐blending mixer, and injection molding machine to prepare environmentally friendly TSF/HDPE composites, which have excellent mechanical properties and good water resistance. On this basis, the interfacial compatibility between TSF and HDPE was enhanced by adding a silane coupling agent KH550, titanate coupling agent 201, and maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MA‐g‐PE), which led to the improvement of mechanical properties of composites. The mechanical properties of the composites with 2% MA‐g‐PE were the best, while the tensile strength and flexural strength increased by 72% and 38%, respectively, compared with the unmodified composites. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that TSF was modified by different coupling agents and new chemical bonds were formed. The scanning electron microscopy images showed that the interfacial compatibility between TSF and HDPE was improved by the interface modifiers. This work confirms that it is possible to use TSF to prepare composites and provides a new way for resource utilization of tobacco stalk fiber.Highlights TSF was incorporated into composites, boosting material sustainability. The interface compatibility between TSF and HDPE was greatly improved. Thermal and water absorption analysis can be used for composites design. Composites modified by 2 wt% MA‐g‐PE had optimal comprehensive properties.

To enhance the adhesion at the interface between polylactic acid (PLA) and local luffa fibers (LFs), and improve the properties of these fully biodegradable biocomposites, 10% of maleic anhydride grafted Styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) is added to act concomitantly as compatibilizer and toughening agent. PLA/LF and PLA/SEBS‐g‐MA/LF biocomposite materials were manufactured by melt mixing and then characterized by torque assessment, Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Izod impact test. In accordance with SEM observation, FTIR analysis and torque measurements, the interfacial bonding coupling the PLA chains to LF via SEBS backbones resulted from the chemical reactions between the functional groups of the composites components. This contributed in increasing notably the impact resistance and the thermal stability compared with the biocomposites without SEBS‐g‐MA. In addition, the improvement of the impact strength might be induced by the flexible ethylene‐butylene blocks, which act as impact absorbers due to their rubber‐like behavior.
