Mechanical responses of a composite sandwich structure with Nomex honeycomb core

Abstract: Weights of honeycomb sandwich composite structures are strictly controlled in scenarios such as in contexts of aerospace engineering. However, such structures extensively studied in past investigations were partly or completely made of aluminum or other metallic materials. Sufficient research has not been reported for honeycomb sandwich composites made of lightweight non-metallic materials. This paper presents an investigation into the mechanical responses of the Nomex honeycomb sandwich structure in a three-p… Show more

“…Modern boards are primarily composed of an inner foam core covered by a thin outer shell, generally called a sandwich structure [6,9]. The foam core enables reduced weight, increased buoyancy, and better stability for the rider, whilst the sandwich structure provides improved bending resistance.…”

“…The pieces of broken boards are harmful to both the environment and humans, especially when toxic materials like fiberglass are used in the production process and considering that more than 400,000 boards are sold every year worldwide [7]. Consequently, researchers have turned their attention to bio-degradable materials and highly stiff structures, which subsequently demand more advance manufacturing by conventional manufacturing methods [8].Modern boards are mostly manufactured with a foam or a lightweight core covered by the top and bottom shells, called a sandwich structure [9]. This lightweight core provides boards with not only a high resistance to bending, preventing boards from breaking, but also an increase in buoyancy, stability, and improved user experience [6,10].…”
