Mechanical Response of Two Carbonate Sediments From Australia’s North West Shelf

Abstract: The carbonate sediments found offshore on the North West Shelf of Australia can generally be described as silts with varying proportions of clay-sized and sand-sized carbonate particles. This paper investigates the undrained shearing response (as measured under simple shear and triaxial conditions) of two sediments with different grading curves. The importance of the fines content in controlling the density and hence dilatancy and undrained strength of the materials is demonstrated. The paper discusses the imp… Show more

“…cv was measured at 36.1 ° A Simple Breakage Model for Calcareous Sand and Its FE Implementation Li et al Submitted July 2021, Revised Nov 2021, Rerevised Feb 2022 8 through a triaxial compression test with a loose sample (Dr = 5%). This value is higher than that of commonly tested silica sands (cv = 31 ° ~ 32 °; Lehane et al, 2014;Teng et al, 2019).…”

“…Thus far a very few researchers have focused on caisson anchor response in calcareous soils (e.g. Randolph et al, 1998;Lehane et al, 2014;Koh et al, 2017Koh et al, , 2020. However, there are no corresponding industry standards and guidelines given in ISO (2016).…”
