Mechanical Properties of the Composite Material consisting of β-TCP and Alginate-Di-Aldehyde-Gelatin Hydrogel and Its Degradation Behavior

Abstract: This work aimed to determine the influence of two hydrogels (alginate, alginate-di-aldehyde (ADA)/gelatin) on the mechanical strength of microporous ceramics, which have been loaded with these hydrogels. For this purpose, the compressive strength was determined using a Zwick Z005 universal testing machine. In addition, the degradation behavior according to ISO EN 10993-14 in TRIS buffer pH 5.0 and pH 7.4 over 60 days was determined, and its effects on the compressive strength were investigated. The loading was… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the 3D-printed scaffolds were more compressive than the microporous β-TCP sintered ceramics, with a compressive strength of 24.16 ± 4.44 MPa. Similar values have already been determined in previous studies [22,30,40]. Miyamoto et al [41] achieved a compressive strength of 4-10 MPa with their CPC scaffolds.…”

“…A balance between good biocompatibility and sufficient mechanical strength must be found. The maximum failure load was 29 ± 9.0 N for the commercially available Curasan β-TCP ceramic [38], 693 ± 85 N for the Curasan cube, which served as a control, and 2641 ± 452 N for the hybrid foam. The hybrid's failure load was 91 times higher than the commercially available Curasan ceramic and four times higher than the control.…”

“…β-TCP ceramics produced with this method were analyzed in other works using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and were found to have a mean pore diameter of 4.8 ± 1.2 µm [ 32 ] or an average pore radius of 2.1 ± 0.3 µm [ 33 ].…”
