Mechanical properties of Nd–Ba–Cu–O bulk superconductors

Abstract: We investigated the effects of Nd422 and Ag particles on the mechanical properties in Nd–Ba–Cu–O bulk superconductors. Both Nd422 and Ag particles were effective in decreasing the amount of microcracks running along the c direction. In the case of Nd422, however, excessive Nd422 addition enhanced the crack propagation, resulting in the degradation of mechanical strength. In the case of Ag addition, the beneficial effect of its ductile mechanical property was not observed. This was due to a relatively large siz… Show more

“…In addition, the volume fraction of RE-211 in the a-growth direction tends to be higher than that of the c-growth direction due to the difference in the critical radius for each direction [9,14]. Previous studies have shown a dependence of the mechanical properties on regional porosity as well as the initial RE-211 fraction of the precursor powders [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Then, investigation about the mechanical properties of Dy123 bulks with small amount of Ag additives will be useful for development and practical applications of bulk current leads. Although the mechanical properties of Ag added bulks have been reported [4][5][6][7][8][9][10], the properties of bulks with Ag additives less than 10 wt.% have not been investigated extensively.…”
