Mechanical Properties of Natural Jute Fabric/Jute Mat Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Hybrid Composites

Abstract: Recycled needle punched jute fiber mats as a first natural fiber reinforcement system and these jute mats used as a core needle punched with recycled jute fabric cloths as skin layers as a second natural fiber reinforcement system were used for unsaturated polyester matrix composites via modifying the hand lay-up technique with resin preimpregnation into the jute fiber in vacuum. The effect of skin jute fabric on the tensile and bending properties of jute mat composites was investigated for different fiber wei… Show more

“…flexural strength and flexural modulus) obtained from flexural load v/s extension graph (figure 6) for pure and modified jute composites are presented in figure 7. Flexural results of the present composite was seen close to those of reported in the earlier published works [27,28,30]. In case of flexural analysis, a similar trend like tensile test result was observed.…”

“…tensile strength and tensile modulus) obtained from tensile load v/s displacement diagram (figure 3) for pure and modified jute composites are presented in figure 4. Tensile properties of the present composite was found close to those of reported in the previous published works [27,29,30]. A positive effect of surface modifications by treatments (alkali, benzoyl chloride and sodium bicarbonate treatment) with PLA of jute fibres were observed in terms of enhancement in tensile properties of its composite.…”

“…From these results, the delamination of matrix is more severe in STGC than SLGC composites and the delamination in SLGC is higher than that of PWGC composites as shown in Figure 3a2, 3b2 and 3c2. Similar results in jute sandwich composites were reported [19] where the flexural properties of short jute-polyester composites with plain woven jute fibers as skin layers are higher than those without skin layers. Figure 6 shows the flexural fracture of different composites through the whole thickness.…”

“…In this context, natural fibers have been studied as a good alternative for reinforcement being mixed with pure biodegradable polymers or their blends to form composites with reduced environmental impact [8] . Fibers of curaua, jute, sisal, sugarcane, and others have been tested for this purpose [4,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] .…”
