Mechanical Properties of Hardened AISI 52100 Steel in Hard Machining Processes

Abstract: This paper provides an approach using tensile tests at elevated temperatures to estimate mechanical properties of the work material for both elastic and plastic deformations in a broad range of strain, strain rate, and temperature in machining. The proposed method has been applied to estimate mechanical properties of hardened AISI 52100 steel in hard machining. Tensile testing is shown capable of estimating the mechanical properties of both elastic and plastic regions with large strains at elevated temperature… Show more

“…This contact interaction is studied in detail by analytically using Hertz theory in the present work. The induced von Mises stress in the cylinder/roller is less then the yield strength 1410.17 N/mm 2 of roller material AISI 52100 steel (Guo and Liu, 2002).…”

“…S. 9202, 2001;Harris & Kotzalas, 2007;Horng, Ju & Cha, 2000;Demirhan & Kanber, 2008;Kania, 2006). Taking modulus of elasticity E = 201330 N/mm 2 and Poission ratio v = 0.277 for the bearing material AISI 52100 steel (Guo & Liu, 2002). These five cylindrical roller bearings are selected in such a way that the size of roller should be in step of 5 mm approximately.…”

“…Other researchers have investigated composition, temperatures and wear characteristics of CBN cutting tools [1,8,[20][21][22]28] and the effects of work material properties, tool geometry and cutting conditions on surface integrity of the finish-machined parts [23][24][25][26][27][28]. They reported challenges in identifying various process, equipment and tooling related factors affecting surface quality, tool life and productivity.…”

“…Regarding the material property of hardened 52100 bearing steel, several models were researched [18,19], but these models lead to certain contradictions. Poulachon et al [18] neglected the effect of strain rate for the constitutive relation, but Guo et al [19] considered strain rate as a dominant factor. The Johnson-Cook equation is used in this study to represent the workpiece material constitutive property and its constants (r 0 , B, n, c, m) are determined based on machining tests.…”
