Mechanical Properties of Glued‐Laminated Timber with Different Assembly Patterns

Abstract: A glued-laminated timber section with mixed-grade laminae could make an efficient use of material strength and reduce the cost. A 4-point bending test was conducted on a total of 18 specimens to investigate the mechanical properties of glued-laminated timber. Uniform-grade, asymmetrical mixed-grade, and symmetrical mixed-grade patterns were used to assemble the beam sections. The bending stiffness and reliability of the beams were assessed according to the experimental results. The influence of the assembly pa… Show more

“…Glulam can be considered the evolution of lumber beams as the production process involves a more advanced technique, which distributes the natural defects of the wood more evenly in the piece, reducing the standard deviation of its physical and mechanical properties, and therefore increasing its bending strength (THORHALLSSON; HINRIKSSON; SNAEBJÖRNSSON, 2017). The laminations with their grains oriented along the length of the piece can be distributed in the cross-section to generate homogeneous or combined glulam, and in turn, straight, tapered, or curved pieces can be manufactured (BRITISH…, 1999;GAO et al, 2019).…”

“…Other influences on the properties of wood are the soil, climate, altitude, the season in which the tree was cut, and, last but not least, the method and quality of processing. In the case of wood as a construction material, we speak either of sawn wood, which is obtained by cutting from conifers or broad-leaved trees [ 22 ], or wood-based materials, such as glued laminated timber [ 23 ], which is produced by gluing wooden squares to the required size and shape. Wood shows different physical and mechanical properties in mutually perpendicular directions.…”

“…The soil, climate, altitude, the time of the year in which the tree was cut and, last but not least, the subsequent method and quality of processing have a major impact on the characteristics of timber. In the case of wood as a structural material, either grown wood, which is obtained by cutting from a trunk of coniferous or broadleaved timber [2], or wood-based material such as glued laminated timber [3], which is made by gluing timber laminations to the required size and shape, are considered. The timber exhibits different physical and mechanical properties in mutually perpendicular directions.…”
