Mechanical Properties of Gamma-Irradiated Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites

Abstract: Today we are facing a great problem due to the synthetic compounds, as most of them are not environmentally friendly. Natural fibers are the fibers which are obtained from the nature and these fibers are environment friendly. So the use of natural fiber is increasing day by day in different sectors. But natural fiber has some limitations for widely use, one of them is the hydrophilic nature. So it cannot be widely used. That is why we need to incorporate them with low mechanical property synthetic compounds, w… Show more

“…The use of natural fibers, derived from annually renewable source, as reinforcing fibers in both thermoplastic and thermosetting matrix composites provides positive benefits with respect to ultimate disposability and raw material utilization [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Coir fiber has received considerable attention for its diversified use both in academic and industrial research.…”

“…With the help of several chemical treatments and gamma radiation, the hydrophilicity of PALF fibers can be changed and reduced which increase the fiber/matrix adhesion of the composite materials resulting in better composite quality and properties. Unsaturated polyester and epoxy are used as thermoset polymer and found to be the potential matrix materials for PALF fibers [13,20]. Now-a-days, epoxy resins are used as a thermoset polymer for various engineering applications.…”

“…The hazardous effects of handling the radiation source are relatively less in case of UV radiation than the gamma radiation. These are the main reasons for selecting UV radiation sources for the betterment of mechanical properties of prepared materials [7][8][9][10][11]. Monomer treatment is one of the best methods for the improvement of the properties of the composite materials [12][13][14].…”
