Aluminum matrix composites are key materials used in the preparation of lightweight structural parts. It has the advantages of low density, high specific strength, and high specific stiffness. Additionally, its friction and wear properties are important factors that determine the material’s suitability for use in a batch. Therefore, this paper systematically analyzes the current research on the friction and wear behavior of particle-reinforced aluminum matrix composites. It also discusses the effects of various internal factors, such as the microstructure characteristics of the matrix materials and the state of the reinforced particles, as well as external factors like wear pattern, applied load, sliding speed, thermal treatment, and temperature on the friction and wear properties of these composites. The applications of particle-reinforced aluminum matrix composites in the fields of transportation, aerospace, and electronics are summarized. In addition, this paper discusses the current research status and future development trends regarding the wear behavior of particle-reinforced aluminum matrix composites. Finally, this study aims to provide technical references for researching the friction and wear properties of particle-reinforced aluminum matrix composites. It is intended to benefit scientific researchers and engineering technicians and provide insights for the development of new composite materials in the future.

Functional graded nanocomposites (FGNCs) based on Al are artificially tailored heterogeneous materials intended to serve the demand for diverse and contradicting properties used in various industrial applications. FGNCs and hybrid FGNCs (HFGNCs) based on Al reinforced with graphene and vanadium carbide (VC) were prepared using powder metallurgy techniques and investigated. Both samples were designed with a gradient composition, where the bottom layer consisted of 100% pure Al, followed by three consecutive layers containing progressively increasing amounts of reinforcement. The incorporation of graphene and VC into layer powders resulted in a decrease in both particle and crystal dimensions compared to pure Al. Adding graphene has a negative effect on bulk density samples, while VC has a positive effect. Reinforcing materials led to a decrease in thermal conductivity that reached 26.7 % for samples reinforced with VC reinforcement, except for FGNCs reinforced with graphene, which increased by ~3.3 compared to Al. The samples’ CTE and electrical conductivity values decreased, although adding graphene alone led to a slight decrease in electrical conductivity. Herein, investigations on the microstructural, physical, and mechanical properties of molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2)‐ and tungsten disilicide (WSi2)‐reinforced aluminum (Al)–copper (Cu) matrix composites are reported. Powder metallurgy methods such as mechanochemical synthesis (MCS), mechanical alloying (MA), cold pressing, and pressureless sintering are combined to produce composites. First of all, MoSi2 and WSi2 nanoparticles are synthesized by MCS and selective acid leaching, yielding reinforcement materials for Al–Cu matrix. Powder blends consisting of 95 wt% Al and 5 wt% Cu are mixed with metal disilicides at different weight percentages (1, 2, and 5 wt%). MA for 4 h is conducted on these overall blends using a high‐energy ball mill. Microstructural and thermal properties of the as‐blended and mechanically alloyed powders are determined, and then they are compacted under 450 MPa and sintered at 550 °C for 2 h. Mechanical characterization of the composites reveals an increase in hardness and wear resistance with an increasing amount of reinforcement content. Among bulk samples, 5 wt% WSi2‐reinforced composites have the highest microhardness (165 ± 15 HV) and lowest wear rate (1.69 × 106 μm3 Nm−1) values. However, under the compression forces, the highest toughness and strength are obtained from 2 wt%‐reinforced composites.
