Mechanical properties of AISI 1045 carbon steel plates weld overlay with EnDOTec DO15 using CMT and GMAW-P

Abstract

Cold metal transfer (CMT) and gas metal arc welding with pulsed current (GMAW-P) were used to apply a hardfacing layer on AISI 1045 steel plates with EnDOTec DO15 ller wire. Three conditions were studied for the plates with hardfacing; as welded (AW), annealed (ANN) after welding for minimum hardness and tempered heattreated (HT) after welding targeting hardness values of ~ 400 Vickers units. For the same metallurgical condition, there were no noticeable variation in the microhardness values despite the welding process used. The only difference found was the extent of the heat affected zone (HAZ) being smaller for the CMT process. The HAZ showed a re ned microstructure that was fully and partially reversed for the ANN and HT conditions, respectively.For the tensile tests of the EnDOTec DO15 ller material, the AW condition exhibited a brittle behavior. The highest yield strength values were obtained in the HT condition (1327.1 ± 34.5 MPa for GMAW-P and 1422.55 ± 9.65 MPa for CMT). The ANN condition showed yield strength values of 715.5 ± 3.3 MPa for GMAW-P and 719.88 ± 7.72 MPa for the CMT. Charpy impact tests were performed using weld cladded samples with the V-groove in two positions, over the hardfacing layer and over the AISI 1045 substrate. The specimens with the notch on the carbon steel plate recorded the highest values of absorbed energy for the three metallurgical conditions. The results proved that irrespective of the power source employed the mechanical properties of the weld overlay cladded plates are very good.
