Mechanical properties and permeability of red mud-blast furnace slag-based geopolymer concrete

Abstract: Red mud, a by-product of alumina production, has a great impact on the environment due to its high alkalinity. In this paper, two-part geopolymer mortar was synthesized by combining red mud and blast furnace slag (BFS) to obtain optimized compressive strength and flexural strength for construction materials. Geopolymer concrete was prepared with the cementitious material in the concrete replaced by geopolymer mortar. Mechanical properties, permeability and microscopic properties of geopolymer concrete were mea… Show more

“…The slump cone test was done using freshly mixed GPC per IS 1199: 1959. The slump value was calculated using the height gap between the top of the mold and the top center of the fallen concrete sample [27]. A graded tapping rod with a diameter of 16 mm was also used to obtain the slump value.…”

“…RM and BFS are industrial solid wastes formed IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1755-1315/1335/1/012040 2 from the production of aluminum and iron resources respectively [4,5], and have good physical and mechanical properties and heavy metal pollution adsorption properties after the geopolymer treatment [6,7]. The use of industrial solid waste to prepare contaminated soil remediation materials can not only reduce solid waste storage, but also have the potential to efficiently repair heavy metal contaminated sites, which has gradually attracted the attention of many scholars [8][9][10]. However, the research on S/S materials of red mud combined with blast furnace slag is relatively rare, and its mechanical properties and heavy metal adsorption capacity are worthy of further study.…”

“…Much research has been conducted in recent years on a red-mud-based geopolymer. GPC is a clinker-free and low-energy carbon binder [13][14][15]. GPC is prepared through the activation of industrial waste such as fly ash (FA), metakaolin (MK), red mud (RM), and waste glass, as aluminosilicate sources react with alkaline solutions such as alkali activator agents [16].…”
