Mechanical Characterization of Sheet Moulding Composites for the Automotive Industry

Abstract: Abstract:The mechanical properties of Sheet Moulding Composite (SMC) have been analyzed by means of static and fatigue tests in tension. SMCs show a substantial in-plane anisotropy either in terms of stiffness or strength. Fatigue data were modeled adopting a fatigue model with two parameters, represented by the cyclic number and the mean stress. The statistical implementation of such model was based on the hypothesis that the monotonic tensile strength follows a twoparameter Weibull distribution. The model ha… Show more

“…For short fibre (or discontinuous fibre) composites, the benefits of using beaded fibres may be more pronounced. First, for many applications with short fibres, such as sheet moulding composites for structural parts in the automotive industry, the fibre volume fractions are much lower than that of composites using continuous fibres and can be even as low as 22% [ 38 ]. Therefore, obtaining beaded fibre composites of practical volume fraction is feasible and is not impeded by the presence of beads on the fibre.…”

“…The microsection of the SMC components allowed for a qualitative assessment of fiber/matrix adhesion [36]. Thus, for further investigation of the fiber/matrix impregnation, a scanning electron microscopic (SEM) was used to observe the fracture surfaces of the SMC components.…”

“…Thus, for further investigation of the fiber/matrix impregnation, a scanning electron microscopic (SEM) was used to observe the fracture surfaces of the SMC components. Typically, images captured with a scanning electron microscope have a high depth of focus and thus allow the analysis the corresponding fiber/matrix adhesion, which has a decisive influence on the mechanical properties of SMC [36]. Therefore, three small rods were taken from each SMC components and notched after preparation.…”

“…The quasi-static behavior, damage development, and uniaxial fatigue response of glass fiber SMC-R are also well documented in literature . [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] The interest in carbon fiber SMC-R is more recent and studies on their mechanical properties and processing characteristics are relatively few.…”
