Mechanical characteristics of hollow shear connectors under direct shear force

Abstract: The steel-concrete composite decks have high fatigue durability and deformability in comparison with ordinary RC slabs. Withal, the steel-concrete composite deck is mostly heavier than the RC slabs. We have proposed herein a new type of steel-concrete composite deck which is lighter than the typical steel-concrete composite decks. This can be achieved by arranging hollow sectional members as shear connectors, namely, half-pipe or channel shear connectors. The present study aims to experimentally investigate me… Show more

“…e institute of steel construction recommends the use of a rectangular hollow steel section-based edge beam [80,81]. In some other studies, the hollow steel sections have been investigated creatively, as shear connectors welded to steel I-beam profile, for the estimation of the improvement of the shearing resisting capacity of the composite construction systems [82][83][84][85]. e following section reviews using of hollow steel tubes as the shear connection in composite construction systems.…”

“…is was also carried out to explore the mechanical characteristics, deformability, and shear bond of the proposed connectors, properties that have been greatly impacted by the thickness of the tube to this diameter ratio. Moreover, the HST's shear strength has been compared through various experiments [83][84][85].…”

“…The HST connector shows improvement on steel-concrete composite action of the construction using either as a beam or as shear connectors in column element due to their own notable shear strength and/or concrete infilled ability [7]. Uenaka et al [8] studied experimentally the shear strength of the half hollow steel tube welded on a steel-concrete composite deck with square and circular shapes. The embedded length of the steel tube transferred the shear force to the concrete slab led to concrete crushing failure underneath the tube [1].…”
