Lateritic soil resulting from weathering, particularly the chemical weathering process of rocks, is found widely in tropical and subtropical countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil. The characteristics of this residual soil depend on many factors, including weathering degree, chemical compositions, and laterization degree, indicating their varying properties from one place to another. Thus, it is essential to explore their characteristics before using them as a construction material for a particular structure. In this paper, a lateritic soil sampled from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia has been explored in terms of grain size distribution (GSD), Atterberg limits, specific gravity, compaction, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), unconsolidated undrained (UU) test, FESEM, and EDX. The obtained results indicated that the soil is classified as plastic silt (MH) and A-7-5 according to USCS and AASHTO methods, respectively. The optimum moisture content (OMC) and maximum dry density (MDD) were obtained 28 % and 1.39 g/cm3, respectively, based on the standard compaction method. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) is 200.75 kPa, whereas, in the unconsolidated undrained (UU) test, the deviator stress is equal to 449.4 kPa, 529.3 kPa, and 674 kPa for 50, 100, and 200 kPa, respectively. The total friction angle and undrained cohesion are 25.69° and 115.82 kPa, respectively. According to the FESEM results, the matrix microstructure was detected for the soil. The O, Al, Si, and Fe were detected as primary chemical elements in the soil. The results of this study can help the practitioners to classify the laterite soil and decide based on its characteristics.

The purpose of the research was to assess the possibility of using granulated expanded glass aggregate (GEGA) with cement grout as a replacement of a sub-grade and frost-protection layer, made of natural fine aggregates (NATU), stabilized with a hydraulic binder. Instead of traditional parts of the road construction, such as the sub-grade and frost-protection layer with the application of fine aggregate, stabilized with cement, the authors propose only one layer, made of lightweight water-permeable material, containing GEGA with a grain size from 8 to 11.2 mm. In the article the authors present the physical properties of the materials, applied for the road layers, the properties of the fine aggregate, stabilized with cement, and those of the cement composite with GEGA as an alternative solution. The laboratory test results of fine aggregates, stabilized with cement and of cement composites with GEGA, are presented. Porosity, volume density, compressive strength, and frost resistance are being researched. The results of those tests are meant to play an essential role in designing the thickness of road layers. Different types of pavement structure (asphalt and concrete) and different values of road load are being considered in the given work. The paper is concluded with considerations on an innovative solution, involving the use of ecological materials.

O desenvolvimento de um novo procedimento de classificação para solos lateríticos, que leve suas propriedades mineralógicas e físicas em consideração e, ademais, as concepções apropriadas do meio ambiente tropical úmido, permitirá prever suas utilizações em camadas de rodovias com uma porcentagem mais elevada. A pesquisa em questão avalia o potencial uso da Metodologia de Classificação Universal de Solos Lateríticos para fins de construção de estruturas de rodovias. O procedimento metodológico compreendeu um programa de ensaios para a classificação e avaliação do comportamento resiliente dos solos. Com base no comportamento resiliente e nas ponderações sobre as propriedades de deformação permanente adotadas, a análise mecanística-empírica indicou bom comportamento dos solos analisados quando empregados em camadas de base em tráfegos menores. Entretanto, mesmo apresentando boas condições, os solos poderiam necessitar de estabilização, seja granulométrica com adição de solo granular, e/ou química com incorporação de cal ou cimento, principalmente na tentativa de combater a retração.
