Mechanical Behaviour Simulation for Synchromesh Mechanism Improvements

Abstract: This paper deals with the synchromesh behaviour of the manual car gearbox. Firstly, the state of the art on Borg-Warner-type synchronizers is presented. Then, the gear-changing process is studied and eight main operating phases are defined. The phases are described using classical tribological, mechanics, and thermodynamics theories. Models are interconnected to describe synchronizer behaviour and they are included in a numerical simulation software. Measured data are compared with the results of simulation so… Show more

“…On the other hand, increasing the gearbox input shaft speed is possible through partial clutch engagement, usually necessary at downshifts. Since those features enable the synchronization without synchromesh [2], synchromesh mechanisms [3] may be replaced with simpler and mechanically more robust face dog clutches [4], realizing major advantages compared to synchromesh: longer life expectancy, higher transmittable torque and cost benefits.…”

“…Different from synchronizer models in other literatures [1][2][3][4] where the sleeve can only move axially, the space motion of the sleeve in this article is considered by introducing the flexible shift fork and by applying the shift force on it, which is illustrated in Figure 10. Since the shift fork and the sleeve are connected by fixed joints, the sleeve can rotate slightly along the Y-axis and Z-axis besides its axial movement along X-axis.…”

“…Displacement of the sleeve, relative velocity, cone torque, index torque and relative angle were obtained from the analytical model. Lovas et al 2 defined and studied the eight main operating phases of the Borg-Warner-type synchronizer with one conical surface clutch. The stick-slip and second bump were investigated in detail.…”

“…Clutch control systems for trucks with electro-pneumatic actuators are considered in the work (Langjord, 2011). The gearshift process and synchronization are discussed in detail in the works Lovas et al, (2006), Ivarsson et al, (2010), Junnarkar and Raibhole (2017). In some papers, the influence optimization of transmissions shift schedules on the traction performance and fuel consumption of vehicles is considered (Liao and Quail, 2011).…”
