“…Hence, RC/ECC composite columns were designed where ECC is used in potential plastic hinge regions as a replacement for concrete. The experimental studies indicated that RC/ECC columns, with different shear‐span ratios and ECC replacement ranges, had better seismic capacities and damage tolerance than RC columns had . For RC/ECC columns with a shear‐span ratio of 5.5 and ECC replacement range of 1.5–2.0 times column depth, a ductile flexure failure was exhibited, although the stirrups in ECC replacement regions were removed .…”

“…Figure shows the comparison of hysteresis behavior between RC and RC/ECC columns. For the columns with shear‐span ratios of 2.0–4.0, the use of ECC with 1.2 times column depth transformed the shear and crushing failure of RC columns to flexure failure even if the stirrup ratio was reduced by half (0.65%) . Furthermore, the cyclic response behavior of RECC and RC/ECC composite columns was close to each other, which means the local replacement of ECC in potential plastic hinge zone is adequate to ensure a good seismic behavior.…”
