Mechanical and Physical Properties of Particleboard Made from the Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) Dung and Wood Shaving

Abstract: Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) are the world’s largest living land mammals. The elephant’s digestive system can only absorb 40% of the nutrients in digested feed, and the remainder is excreted as dung. Elephant dung waste can be used as a particleboard material due to its high fiber content. The objectives of this study are: (i) to prepare elephant dung waste as raw material for particleboard, (ii) to improve elephant dung particleboard’s physical and mechanical properties using wood shavings,… Show more

“…13 It was reported that, these fiber physical changes had contributed the composite panel to obtain a better dimensional stability and low spring back force effect due to reduction of accumulated pressure between fiber particles during the composite hot press process. 14 A greater spring back force effect can also occur when the fabrication of composite panel is using large fibers and low-density fiber particles. 15 Technically, large and low-density fiber particles tend to cause the fiber to experience greater bulky effect and create greater pressure during the hot press.…”

“…The particleboards’ structure modification by fibers can lead not only to a surface quality improvement but also to selected mechanical and physical properties modification. According to Hartono et al [ 14 ], the addition of wood shavings improves the elephant dung particleboard’s physical and mechanical properties, especially when the ratio of elephant dung and wood shavings reaches 1:1. The only weakness of the tested panels was moisture content and water absorption, since they did not improve when the panels’ structure has been modified [ 15 ].…”

“…The plant is a durable annual that may reach heights of 2 to 5 meters, but because it is moisture sensitive, it performs best when planted during the rainy season [12]. Particleboard is a material that is produced in huge quantities and is mostly used to make furniture since it has strong mechanical qualities and is easy to work with [13,14]. It is the most widely used panel material for non-structural uses.…”
