Mechanical and electret properties of polypropylene unwoven fabrics reinforced with POSS for electret filter materials

Abstract: A novel polypropylene/Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (PP/POSS) composite unwoven fabric with permanent electret was prepared through melt-blown process with corona charging. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD) were employed to investigate the morphology of the composite fibers and the distribution of POSS nanoparticles on the surface of the fibers, respectively. POSS acted as nucleating agent and accelerated the crystallization process during noni… Show more

“…POSSs can be used, for example, as low dielectric constant (low-k) interlayer insulators, low refractive index layers of antireflection films, 1,2 as sensors, 3 as electrolyte for ion exchange membrane in fuel cell applications, 4 as novel curing agent for epoxy system 5 and also for electret filter materials for environmental protection. 6 They have considerable importance owing to their excellent thermal, mechanical, optical, and electrical properties 7,8 due to both their nanosized and cubic structure and inorganic cage. [9][10][11] The increasing importance of POSSs is also due to their employment as fillers in the production of polymer nanocomposites.…”

“…On the other hand, fibers with thinner diameter tend to entwist more strongly. which can significantly improve the mechanical properties of nanofiber membranes . The diameter of PVDF/POSS nanofibers decreases after addition of POSS confirmed by SEM analysis.…”

“…The nanofiller also led to smaller elementary fiber diameters as compared to unmodified fibers [5]. Those results were corroborated by Xiaoyan Song et al, who improved mechanical, electrostatic, and filtration properties by incorporating a POSS nanofiller into a polypropylene melt [6]. The addition of magnesium stearate (MgSt) to the polypropylene melt in a melt-blown process increased its electrostatic potential and improved its filtration properties and air permeability (99.22% filtration efficiency with an airflow resistance of 85 L/min at 92 Pa).…”
