Mechanical and bonding properties of pristine montmorillonite reinforced epoxy asphalt bond coats

Abstract: Epoxy asphalt bond coat (EABC) has been widely used as a bonding layer in the construction of orthotropic steel deck bridges. To withstand the vibration of the steel deck, EABC needs to have strong bonding strength. In present article, sodium montmorillonite (Mt) was used to reinforce the neat EABC. The morphology and properties of EABC/Mt nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Brookfield rotational viscometer, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analys… Show more

“…The rotational viscosity-curing time curves of the unmodified and WCO-modified EAR binders at 160 °C are presented in Figure 1 . Unlike conventional asphalt rubber binders, the rotational viscosity of the unmodified EAR binder increases in the curing time because of the curing of epoxy [ 50 ]. The inclusion of WCO lowers the rotational viscosity of the unmodified EAR binder.…”

“…The former is used to adhere aggregates to produce epoxy asphalt mixtures, while the latter serves as a bonding coating between the surfacing and deck plate or two surfacings. [12][13][14] Furthermore, epoxy asphalt binder can be further cataloged into three groups: cold-mix, warm-mix, and hot-mix. [15][16][17][18] Among all these binders, the eco-friendly warm-mix one has been extensively utilized in the United States and China since 1967.…”
