Measuring visual search and distraction in immersive virtual reality

Abstract: An important issue of psychological research is how experiments conducted in the laboratory or theories based on such experiments relate to human performance in daily life. Immersive virtual reality (VR) allows control over stimuli and conditions at increased ecological validity. The goal of the present study was to accomplish a transfer of traditional paradigms that assess attention and distraction to immersive VR. To further increase ecological validity we explored attentional effects with daily objects as s… Show more

“…This analysis also shows that ship sinking/collision incidents are the 16% of the value of all claims, and the most expensive cause of loss for insurers as they are equivalent to more than $1.5bn. Likewise the value of claims from machinery damage incidents was $1bn+ [12].…”

“…From the perspective of psychology, VR environments provide an interesting platform for doing research on the cognitive processes underpinning human learning and behavior [12]. However, the research of the basic cognitive processes in the VR is just emerging.…”

“…A group of studies investigated human's visual behavior in a search task using naturalistic scenes displayed in a 2D-screen (e.g., [12,[21][22][23][24][25]). The fast development of modern technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and VR eye tracking enabled researchers to study visual search in more realistic 3D environments [26,27]. In order to increase the level of immersion of the experimental paradigm, in the current study, we focus on real-world static visual scenes displayed in virtual reality, ensuring free body and head movement.…”

“…Thus, virtual reality makes us one step closer to generalize the laboratory results on everyday activities. As Olk et al [2018] put it: "Virtual reality allows building a bridge between traditional research in the laboratory and daily situations. "…”
