ABSTRACT. We collected ∼1300 km of ground-penetrating radar profiles over McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, using frequencies between 40 and 400 MHz to determine extent, continuity and depth to the brine. We also used profiles to determine meteoric ice thickness and locate englacial features, which may suggest ice shelf instability. The brine extends 9-13 km inland from the ice shelf terminus and covers the entire region between Ross, White and Black Islands. Jump unconformities and basal fractures exist in the brine and ice shelf, respectively, suggesting prior fracturing and re-suturing. One 100 MHz profile, the most distal from the ice shelf edge while still being situated over the brine, simultaneously imaged the brine and bottom of meteoric ice. This suggests a negative brine salinity gradient moving away from the terminus. The meteoric ice bottom was also imaged in a few select locations through blue ice in the ablation zone near Black Island. We suggest that brine, sediment-rich ice and poor antenna coupling on rough ice attenuates the signal in this area. When combined with other recent mass-balance and structural glaciology studies of MIS, our results could contribute to one of the most high-resolution physical models of an ice shelf in Antarctica.

An important parameter in terramechanics is the rut depth produced when a vehicle traverses deformable soil. The rut depth provides a measure of vehicle tractability as well as the impact on the environment. Rut depth is not uniform on natural terrain and typically only a few manual points are measured. Synchronizing rut depth with other measurements is also problematic. This paper investigates the feasibility of using cameras to measure 3D terrain profiles from which a single rut depth measurement is obtained. Tests were performed on different vehicles, for various dynamic vehicle manoeuvres, over varying terrains including sand, mud, grassland, snow and ice. Results were validated using the traditional stick ruler method.Measurement frequencies of 58Hz were obtained using affordable commercially of the shelf computational hardware and dedicated software. Determining whether a vehicle can traverse a terrain can significantly improve the vehicle mobility. Therefore, real time measurements of rut depth can be used to determine the mobility of vehicles in off-road conditions that can change rapidly due to environmental conditions e.g. rain or snow. The techniques described can assist in gathering terrain and vehicle mobility data that can be used directly to assist the driver in making safety related decisions.

One of the key elements of military terrain analysis is the classification of terrain in terms of passability. It consists of dividing terrain into three categories: (NO GO, SLOW GO and GO TERRAIN). In this paper, the author presents the comparative analysis of passability maps created with the use of various spatial databases, including: BDOT10k, BDOO, Corine Land Cover, and OSM. They were compared to maps generated based on data included in the Military Geographic Resource (VMap Level 2 and 1). The created maps were then compared with a passability map prepared manually by the operator. In order for the maps to be comparable, an identical algorithm was used to generate them. The research consists of determining the index of passability for a square primary field of various dimensions (side length from 100 m to 5 km). The results demonstrated that “non-military” spatial databases may be successfully used to generate military passability maps.
