Measuring Tourism Risk Impacts on Destination Image

Abstract: This study develops and tests an integrated model of the moderated mediation of risks (man-made and natural disasters) that explains the associations between the benefits of tourism and the destination image. The study also considers how tourists are influenced by natural disasters and provides empirical evidence to predict the hypothesis models. The results of a study of 635 foreign tourists indicate that the tourism risks of man-made disasters positively influence the tourists' experienced benefits and feeli… Show more

“…Hence, tourists demand safety, guarantee, and detailed information in order to balance medical care outcomes against the potential risks associated with health/wellness treatments as well as other societal risks [48,83,84]. Moreover, in a general sense, perceptions of risks underlying images of tourism destinations may determine the success or failure of a tourist destination or otherwise [85]. Lower risk protocols adopted by health/medical destination may act as attractions for health tourists.…”

“…It is the aftermath of experience that significantly shapes, transforms, and influences how tourists perceive risk (Yang & Nair, ). Ruan, Li, and Liu () identify that perceived risk is considered to be manifested in tourists' tendency to consider their actual experience, thus helping tourist organizations and destinations evaluate the impacts of crises or disasters. Following the definition of Schiffman, O'Cass, Paladino, and Carlson (), this study proposes a new construct, site experiential risk, and defines it as the uncertainty that tourists face when they cannot predict all of the consequences associated with their experiences of visiting dark tourism sites.…”

“…The following section describes the most relevant characteristics of the empirical works that are classified within the integrative approach. It is necessary to point out that there are other works (besides those indicated in table 1) that analyze the relationship between risk and image but, since they do not include in the model their influence on behavioral intention (e.g., Ruan et al, 2017), they are not considered to be part of the integrative approach.…”

“…Moreover, the identification of risk factors contributes to a better understanding of the destination's image and makes it possible to understand its impact on the tourist's behavior" (Hamouda & Yacoub, 2018: 69). Ruan, Li and Liu (2017) suggest that when tourists consider the perceived risk in the decision to visit a destination, it becomes a determinant of its image. Perceived risk and destination image are multidimensional concepts.…”
