“…Musculoskeletal pain/stiffness in the neck/shoulders, arms/hands, upper back, lower back, hips/legs/feet and ''other'' during the last 4 weeks were registered, the duration of each symptom was noted as more or less than 2 weeks, and a musculoskeletal symptom score was calculated, with range 0-24. Hopkin Symptom Check List 10 (HSCL-10) with a cutoff value of 1.85 as the upper normal limit was used for the assessment of mood disorders (mainly anxiety and depression) (Strand et al, 2003). The musculoskeletal questionnaire and HSCL-10 have been translated into Norwegian, validated and extensively used in the national surveys of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.…”

“…This cut-off has previously been shown to have a sensitivity of 89 % and specificity of 98 % with respect to detecting anxiety or depression compared to the more extensive 25-item HSCL version. 48 Non-abdominal chronic pain was assessed in a separate section of the questionnaire, independent of the IBS-module. Participants were classified as having chronic pain if they responded 'yes' to the question "Do you have persistent pain that has lasted for three months or longer?"…”
