PurposeThe environmental characteristics of international football can vary significantly from one country to another. As a result, the economic and market possibilities and the objectives of each national league are very heterogeneous. This article aims to examine the differences in revenue structures amongst European national football leagues (n = 50) and cluster them based on these structures. It also investigates which revenue structure would be more effective for similar leagues, considering the previously mentioned varying environmental characteristics of international football.Design/methodology/approachThe study utilises a theoretical framework of business modelling, applied in a unique way to league organisers of national championships. Data on sports and business aspects were collected from sources such as the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Financial Benchmarking Reports, transfermarkt.de and related sources for the period 2015 to 2018. K-means cluster analysis, using the Euclidean distance approach, was employed to develop clusters based on revenue sources over a four-year average.FindingsThe paper presents the characteristics and year-to-year changes of nine developed clusters. Throughout the analysis, variables such as average overpayment and inequality between player values amongst leagues were prioritised. The study's practical implications can assist league organisers in enhancing the competitiveness of their leagues, supported by short case studies that provide illustrative examples.Originality/valueThe novelty of the current article lies in introducing innovative variables such as the variance of player value whilst focussing on meso-level analysis, providing a fresh contribution to the existing literature in the field for understanding revenue structures and performance in European national football leagues.

This investigation analyzes four strategic factors – leadership, human capital, value creation, and distinctive capabilities system – influencing professional football clubs' sporting success and financial wealth. We developed two models during the investigation. The first model focuses on the four factors per se of sporting success and financial wealth, and the second model focuses on the multidimensional construct “INPUTS”. This latent factor aggregates the four distinct ones relating to the factors as a single concept. The results show that (i) only the leadership and the system of distinctive capabilities per se influence the “OUTPUTS”; and (ii) “INPUTS” have a strong influence on “OUTPUTS”, more significant than the sum of the four factors. The differential of this investigation is the conclusions related to the “INPUTS”, since the four factors are closely interconnected and, when treated as a single concept, a door is opened to capture transitory competitive opportunities and advantages through an innovation behavior. Customer and human capital centric. Furthermore, we also confirm that the distinctive capabilities system is the transmission shaft between innovation behavior and “OUTPUTS”. We did a cross-sectional survey to collect the perceptions of Portuguese football coaches. In addition, a quantitative study was used in the treatment of data, including PLS-SEM.

Tourism is one of the most contributing economic sectors globally and is especially important for developing economies, due to its contribution to GDP, creation of new jobs and its impact on economic development. The tourism sector has gained a lot of attention from academia and governments due to its strategic position in the economy. Its efficiency and performance are closely researched and analysed. One of the leading nonparametric methodologies that have been often used to evaluate relative efficiency of homogeneous entities is the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The main goal of this chapter is to identify, present and explore the applications of DEA in different aspects of Croatian and Serbian tourism. Other goals are to present and analyse the findings of the twelve surveyed papers and to highlight the benefits and limitations of the DEA methodology. Additionally, this research represents an incentive and an inspiration to other academic members and researchers to apply the DEA methodology in their future studies when analysing and investigating efficiency in the tourism sector, as well as any other economic sector.
