Measuring the effects of guided clinical reasoning on the Advanced Nursing Process quality, on nurses’ knowledge and attitude: Study protocol

Abstract: Aim This article is a report of a study protocol designed to examine the effects of guided clinical reasoning on the quality of the Advanced Nursing Process—the evidence‐based version of the traditional nursing process. It aims to describe the theoretical framework—Kirkpatrick's evaluation model, the key concepts and the instruments for the planned study. “…The overall objective was to measure the effects of an educational intervention on nurses' knowledge, attitude and the Advanced Nursing Process quality by performing an experimental intervention study (Leoni‐Scheiber, Mayer, & Müller‐Staub, ). The aim of this paper is to report baseline findings and relationships between nurses' knowledge and attitude towards the Advanced Nursing Process; the quality of NDs, interventions and outcomes; and patient characteristics (gender, age, LOS).…”

“…In the case of item 10, the question and scoring criteria were phrased differently between the original and the translation; therefore, the item description was revised to improve the interpretation. In addition, nurses’ evidence-based diagnostic competency was found to lead to positive outcomes for patients [ 11 , 31 ]. Therefore, the items evaluating accurate diagnosis, skills and strategies were maintained in the K-CRAR.…”

“…Clinical reasoning is affected by constructivism [ 2 ]. It is defined as a dynamic thinking process to integrate patient data, assess the significance of these data and choose alternative actions [ 10 , 11 ]. Levett-Jones and colleagues [ 2 ] developed the eight cyclic phases of the clinical reasoning model.…”

“…The availability of standardised languages provides nurses with benefits related to improved communication, assistance in the delivery of patient care, increased visibility of the nursing profession through nursing interventions, nursing practice outcomes, and education of future nurses. The Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) is a standardised nursing language that has been translated into nine languages and has been used to explore and describe nursing practice in a variety of nursing practice specialisms, patient groups, and healthcare settings ( 11 , 12 ). Recent works highlight that stoma therapy nurse demand the use of unified standardized indicators that provide sufficient data to measure, quantify and assess the level and quality of care provided ( 4 ).…”
