PurposeThis study intends to investigate the extent to which the Sri Lanka Army can be described as a learning organization.Design/methodology/approachThe main tool of analysis used was the Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) developed by Marsick and Watkins, with the exclusion of the sections on financial and knowledge performance.FindingsUsing the DLOQ, the research found that the dimensions of a learning organization proposed by Marsick and Watkins are present in the Sri Lanka Army, although with some aberrations between different ranks.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was conducted without a directly connected dependent variable.Practical implicationsThis study shows how even a non‐profit‐oriented organization like the Sri Lanka Army can be informed from a concept like the learning organization, and indeed emphasizes the overarching need for a military organization to operate as a learning organization. Therefore, this research has reiterated the fact that the learning organization is a prescription that all organizations, even not‐for‐profit ones, should ardently pursue. The research also offers recommendations for improvements in the performance of the Sri Lanka Army by identifying certain weaknesses.Originality/valueBy initiating the use of the DLOQ in the Sri Lankan as well as a military context, the study has opened the doors for administering the DLOQ and similar tools for measuring the extent of organizational learning and the presence and strength of learning organizational characteristics in Sri Lanka.

Faculty Members’ Perception of Learning Organization: A Case of Higher Education Institutions

Based on the learning organization theory the main purpose of this research is to discuss how demographics variables affect the learning organization disciplines perception in faculty members of higher education institutes (HEIs) of Pakistan. This study explores that how demographic variables affect the learning organization disciplines perception at the HEIs level. We use the demographic variables and learning organization model in higher education institutions of Pakistan. In doing so, we used a survey instrument to collect data from 253 faculty members of HEIs in Pakistan. In addition, 15 in-depth interviews were conducted with the same respondents. Study findings revealed that there is a low application of the learning organization disciplines in HEIs in Pakistan. Further study also explains that demographic variables generated a variance of 2.7% in learning organization culture. Further, this study suggested some substantial implications for universities and regulatory bodies of HEIs.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to study the validity of the concept of learning organization through the use of the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) in an Indian public sector organization. Literature on learning organizations was reviewed to ascertain the sample organization's progress toward becoming a learning organization. The current research also tries to explore the relationship (if any) between learning organization dimensions and organizational performance. Design/methodology/approach -The study employed a survey method for collecting data from 204 respondents from the sample organization. The data were statistically analyzed and interpretations were made. Findings -The study reveals that the sample organization scores high on the various learning organization dimensions (seven dimensions of DLOQ), which in turn impact knowledge performance and financial performance. Learning organization practices and processes are prevalent in the sample organization and it is progressing well toward its vision of becoming a learning organization (mentioned in its HR vision).Research limitations/implications -The data for the study were collected from a single sample organization. Hence, any sweeping generalization of the results needs to be made with caution. Originality/value -This research demonstrates the impact of the four levels of specific learning organization dimensions on its knowledge and financial performance in the context of an emerging country like India.
