Measuring the Built Environment for Aging in Place: A Review of Neighborhood Audit Tools

Abstract: What audit tools are available to assess neighborhood suitability for aging in place? Drawing on theories from environmental gerontology, the article outlines physical and social environmental characteristics influencing aging. Eight research audit tools and three community/practitioner tools were identified using a Boolean search strategy. They emphasize walkability and the physical attributes of places. Areas for further development include addressing specific features related to aging, a wider range of envi… Show more

“…These theories see the home and neighborhood environment as potentially creating stresses for older people or on the other hand providing support-physical, social, and psychological. Similarly, residential normalcy emphasizes how for older people places can provide a comfort zone providing mastery, competence, and control (Golant 2011;Stafford 2017;also Wahl, Iwarsson and Oswald 2012;Kan et al 2020).…”

“…Parallel efforts have generated indicators using local data rather than the WHO AFC framework, including the Multidimensional Assessment System of the Built Environment (MASBE), which was refined using case studies in Mexico and Spain [ 34 ], and the Age-friendly Urban Index (AFUI) in Ireland, which used confirmatory factor analysis to identify three domains and calculate a single score [ 29 ]. In addition, numerous projects have narrowed in on specific aspects of age-friendliness, such as accessibility and protection from harmful exposures [ 35 ]. These include the Mobility Over Varied Environments Scale (MOVES) tool, developed using data from a population-based survey of older Canadians [ 36 ], and the Senior Walking Environmental Assessment Tool (SWEAT), which measures features related to physical activity [ 37 ].…”

“…Many systems, policies, and design guidelines have been introduced and implemented in recent years, taking into account the activities of older people and difficulties in walking, movement related to sitting, and moving in and from wheelchairs. 6,7 In order to solve these social problems for the older adults, various types of devices capable of assisting the elderly in independent daily living are needed. In particular, indoor mobile devices by electric power play an important role for the movement of the elderly in home.…”
