Measuring teacher effects on pupil achievement.

Abstract: Indicates that recent studies have concluded that only the quality of the student body, and not the quality of the school or its teaching staff, "makes a difference" on measures of student learning. These studies, however, have measured only presage variables and have used schools rather than teachers as the unit of analysis. Regression equation data from pupil records in the present study, which used 115 2nd- and 3rd-grade teachers with 5 or more consecutive years of experience teaching at their respective gr… Show more

“…The standardized combined change index was calculated using residual change scores that were computed for each behavior by regressing the 12-month score on the baseline score and standardizing the values to have a mean of zero and standard deviation of 1 (Tucker, et al, 1966, Veldman and Brophy, 1974). A sum of the four standardized residualized change scores was taken to create the standardized residualized change index (SRCI; see Table 1 for details).…”

“…When the selected covariate is timeinvariant, it is meaningful to enquire as to the relationship between the covariate and the individual growth. In addition, the "process-product" paradigm in research on teaching provides many examples of correlates of student learning using measures of teachers' classroom behavior as covariate (for instance, Berliner, 1976;Borich, 1979;Medley, 1979;Veldman & Brophy, 1974).7 Thus, for instance, an investigator may wish to examine the relationship between the socioeconomic status of the home and individual growth in academic achievement at school. Wohlwill (1980) provided an overview of such studies.…”

“…Residualized change scores are referred to as "base-free" measures of change (Tucker et al, 1966) and are viewed as superior to simple pretest -posttest difference scores (Veldman and Brophy, 1974). Residualized change scores are a standard statistical technique and have been used in examining predictors of change in children's physical activity (Sallis et al, 1999).…”
