Background: Mental illness stigma has serious psychological and social consequences for adults, and remains a significant barrier to help-seeking. The aim of this review was to synthesise findings from qualitative and quantitative studies investigating the psychosocial effects of mental illness stigma in youth with mental health problems who access services.Methods: Four databases were searched resulting in 3,353 abstracts with 27 studies included for synthesis. Participants ranged from 8-19 years old across studies. Synthesis was conducted by consolidating qualitative data to be re-analysed in a meta-thematic analysis with qualitative data being additionally tabulated into qualitative codes to facilitate a narrative synthesis. Results:The review identified various deleterious stigma-related outcomes amongst youth such as: accepting or rejecting labels, experiencing poorer mental health, feeling socially rejected or fearful of the need to 'fit in', not seeking help, shame, and remaining secretive of their difficulties/medication use. Perceptions of mental illness were also influenced negatively by family and healthcare professionals. Finally, youth limited their interactions with young people experiencing menta health problems, enhancing their perceived sense of acceptance amongst social groups.Conclusions: Young people experience detrimental stigma-related outcomes which are linked to their need to preserve social identity and social capital. The need for models of mental illness stigma which are developmentally appropriate is essential for the effective development of effective intervention strategies.

Children who have lived with parental mental illness experience long-standing reduced health and social outcomes, alongside ongoing personal distress. While there has been some dialogue regarding interventions to support children who are living with parental mental illness, there remains a paucity of knowledge regarding adult children's experiences and potential needs. Given this, the aim of the present study was to establish parenting narratives of adult children who had experienced childhood parental mental illness. This included their experiences of being parented alongside their own subsequent parenting roles. Three men and 10 women, ranging from 30 to 78 years old, met individually with a researcher to tell their stories. Narratives were thematically analysed to establish themes. The findings of the study demonstrated that individuals who have lived with childhood parental mental illness dehumanized their parent with mental illness. The authors argue that all mental health services should be underpinned with a whole of family assessment and care philosophy. There is also a need for all mental health services to consider how policies and procedures might inadvertently dehumanize clients who are parents, which could contribute to familial dehumanization. This could prevent the dehumanization of parents who experience mental illness to preserve parental and child relationships.

Development of perception of gifted label scale (PGLS): A validity and reliability study

This study attempted to create a valid and reliable instrument to measure how gifted children perceive the gifted label and others' perceptions of giftedness. We recruited a total of 300 gifted Turkish children (59.3% males; 40.7% females) aged 10–13 years (M = 11.4, SD = 0.99) to this validity and reliability study. For validity concerns, we first pooled the items relying on the relevant theoretical frameworks. Next, we resorted to expert opinions and employed the Lawshe technique to explore the content validity of the scale. Then, we performed confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the construct validity of the scale after checking multivariate normality through the Relative Multivariate Kurtosis value. Finally, we calculated Cronbach's alpha coefficients to reveal the internal consistency of the five‐factor model. Content validity ratio values showed that each item on the scale yielded an acceptable level of content validity. In addition, we concluded a significant Content validity index for the scale (0.82). Finally, we calculated Cronbach's alpha coefficients to be higher than .70 for the subscales. Overall, the findings suggested that the perception of gifted label scale (PGLS) has an acceptable psychometric quality regarding its validity and reliability. Gifted children's self‐reports may provide more valuable data to better understand the labeling phenomenon and help design preventive educational interventions against the negative impacts of labeling. Therefore the PGLS may lead the way of future studies on the effects of the gifted label on gifted children.
