Measuring rheumatoid factor in nonrheumatoid subjects: immunoturbidimetric assay, latex slide test, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay compared

Abstract: Previous studies of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have shown a good correlation between results from immunoturbidimetric assays of rheumatoid factor (RF) and latex fixation tests. To extend the research to non-RA subjects, we tested sera from 1000 pregnant women, half each in the first and third trimesters. By turbidimetry, 24 non-RA sera were regarded as positive for RF (greater than or equal to 20 int. units/mL) and 18 sera as borderline (15-19 int. units/mL). By the latex fixation test, 28 non-RA … Show more

“…RF are still the most widely used serological test as an aid for the diagnosis of RA. Most routine laboratory tests in current use are the hemagglutination and the latex agglutination, which detected mainly IgM‐RF 12,13. In these techniques, end points are not objectively determined because an observer decides when agglutination is present and this judgment will vary among observers.…”

“…An ESR >20 mm/h was considered positive (18). Rheumatoid factor (RF) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured by immunonephelometry, RF >15 U/ml and CRP >8 mg/l were considered positive (19,20). Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibody levels were measured by chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay, anti-CCP titers <5.0 RU/ml were judged as negative, and ≥5.0 RU/ml as positive (21).…”
