Studying corruption presents unique challenges. Recent work in the spirit of computational social science exploits newly available data and methods to give a fresh perspective on this important topic. In this chapter we highlight some of these works, describing how they provide insights into classic social scientific questions about the structure and dynamics of corruption in society from micro to macro scales. We argue that corruption is fruitfully understood as a collective action problem that happens between embedded people and organizations. Computational methods like network science and agent-based modeling can give insights into such situations. We also present various (big) data sources that have been exploited to study corruption. We conclude by highlighting work in adjacent fields, for instance on the problems of collusion, tax evasion, organized crime, and the darkweb, and promising avenues for future work.

Understanding how public administrations around the world function and differ is crucial for strengthening their effectiveness. Most comparative measures of bureaucracy rely on surveys of experts, households, or firms, rather than directly questioning bureaucrats. Direct surveys of public officials create granular data for analysis and government action, so are becoming a cornerstone of public sector management. This article introduces the Global Survey of Public Servants (GSPS), a global initiative to collect and harmonize large-scale, comparable survey data on public servants. The corresponding GSPS data set currently contains responses from 1,300,000 + bureaucrats in 1,300+ government institutions in 23 countries. The surveys measure both employee attitudes (such as job satisfaction and motivation), and their experience with management practices (such as recruitment and performance management). This harmonized data enables governments to benchmark themselves and scholars to study comparative public administration and the state differently, based on micro-data from actors who experience government first-hand.

The impact of corruption and public governance quality on family firm business strategy

Corruption is a plague with serious economic and social consequences and has a greater impact than people perceive. The impacts on business are severe but often underestimated. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of public governance environment on the strategical opportunistic use of related party transactions in family firms. Considering corruption as a good indicator of conditions that boost unethical behavior, the study investigates whether high standard of public governance quality at a regional level, as well as low corruption, helps to reduce specific types of opportunistic transactions. Based on a regression analysis on European‐listed family firms in Italy, France, and Germany, we find that high public governance quality at the regional level reduces companies' opportunistic transactions. The study addresses a gap in the literature, first, because it empirically shows a link between the quality of the context and some unethical business strategies, confirming that a negative context leaves room for opportunistic behaviors and that high standards in the public governance quality discourage firms' opportunistic behaviors through specific transactions and, second, because it focuses on family firms suggesting that a strong family power that controls strategy and decision‐making process, if operate in a bad public quality context, may be involved in opportunistic behaviors.
