Measuring quality of life in COPD patients: comparing disease-specific supplements to the EQ-5D-5L

Abstract: Objectives Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) show impairments in health-related quality of life (HRQL). We aimed to find a disease-specific questionnaire for routine application in large cohorts and to assess its additional explanatory power to generic HRQL (EQ-5D-5L). Methods 1,350 participants of the disease management program COPD received the EQ-5D-5L combined with one of the three disease-specific tools: COPD Assessment Test (CAT), Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ) or St. George's… Show more

“…6,31 The correlation with lung function in our study was fair and higher for the EQ-5D-5L1R utility. Correlation between MRC score and utility has been reported to be around 0.5 in previous studies, 6,7,29,30 compared with approximately 0.6 in this study. In line with this analysis, the CAT score was reported to have a moderate-to-strong correlation with utility values in previous studies.…”

“…In line with this analysis, the CAT score was reported to have a moderate-to-strong correlation with utility values in previous studies. 7,29,30 Other studies exploring the performance of bolt-on dimensions for the EQ-5D also found larger differences in utility between subgroups of patients for the EQ-5D with additional dimension. 32,33 A study by de Graaf et al 32 reported slightly larger differences in utility with the EQ-5D-5L plus cognitive dimension than the standard EQ-5D-5L in patients with stroke with different levels of modified Rankin Scale and patients with and without a decrease in health or daily activities.…”

“…However, we adjusted the risk factors in Multivariate regression analysis to minimize the effect of these baseline biases on the research results. Besides, due to the urgency of the epidemic situation and the research conditions, and the SaO 2 was measured under oxygen inhalation, the patient's dyspnea was evaluated using the patient's self-assessed VAS score [8], which may lack objectivity, but can re ect the changes in the subjective feelings of patients to a certain extent. This study revealed that the addition of TCM decoction signi cantly reduced mortality and improved the clinical symptoms.…”

“…Ventilator-assisted ventilation used only for rescue before death is not recorded. We used a visual analog scale (VAS) [8] to evaluate the degree of dyspnea, with that a score of 0 indicates no dyspnea, and 10 indicates unbearable dyspnea. The degree of dyspnea was marked on a scale of about 10cm by the patient.…”
