Congenital clinical anophthalmos and blind microphthalmos describe the absence of an eye or the presence of a small eye in the orbit. Between 1999 and 2013, 97 children with anophthalmos or microphthalmos were treated with self-inflating, hydrophilic gel expanders at the Rostock Eye Clinic. More than a decade later, this study investigated the perspective of patients and parents regarding the treatment, the surgical outcome, and the emotional and social well-being of the patients. A total of 22 families with 16 patients sighted in the other eye and six patients blind in both eyes participated. Questionnaires were developed, including items on physical, emotional, social, and medical aspects. The patients felt emotionally stable and integrated into their social environment, with no major limitations reported by the majority. These statements were confirmed by most of the parents. Parents (67%) indicated that the success of the operation was already apparent after the first intervention and that the current situation did not play a role in the patients’ social environment. The study provided new insights into the therapy results, the postoperative care, and the social and emotional stability of the prosthesis-wearing patients, indicating the chosen expander methods as promising in terms of positive postoperative care.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and quality of life in patients who underwent surgical removal of an eye with those of controls as well as to test the correlations of these variables in both groups. Methods: Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), Beck depression inventory (BDI), 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36), and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were administered to 29 patients with surgical removal of an eye and 30 control subjects. Results: The patient group had significantly lower scores on physical functioning, role limitations due to physical and emotional problems, pain, and general health perception domains of SF-36, as well as significantly higher BDI (p=0.004) scores as compared to controls. The study groups did not differ significantly with respect to BAI scores and energy/vitality, mental health, and social functioning domain scores of SF-36 (p>0.05). Conclusion: This population of monocular patients had similar mental health-related and Beck’s Anxiety Inventory scores equivalent to the control group despite the surgical removal of one eye. However, lower scores for some SF-36 domains and higher depression levels in this patient group suggest that psychiatric rehabilitation should be considered after eye removal to improve the psychological outcomes and quality of life in these patients.

“…A "questão extra" que pretendeu avaliar a satisfação dos pacientes com o uso das próteses oculares, apresentou a média dos escores com o valor mais elevado (m=90). Pelas médias dos escores observados podemos inferir que a qualidade de vida da nossa amostra se apresentou satisfatória.Este dado vai de encontro comRuiters et al (2021) e divergede Casslén et al (2020) eChotprasert et al (2022), que consideram que pacientes sem globo ocular, se mostram com pobre QV, embora considerem que a reabilitação com prótese ocular tende a melhorar este resultado. Por esta razão em nosso estudo incluímos a "questão extra", que pretendeu avaliar a satisfação dos pacientes com o uso das próteses oculares e encontramos que esta média foi a mais elevada (m=90), o que nos faz inferir que ela foi determinante para a QV satisfatória.Com o intuito de verificarmos possíveis diferenças entre as categorias da variável "causa da perda", os resultados mostraram que as três categorias apresentaram diferenças ditas estatisticamente não-significantes (p> 0,050), ou seja, seus valores são estatisticamente semelhantes (tabela 5.4).…”
