Measuring psychometric characteristics of the elderly sensory responsivity questionnaire– A tool for screening sensory processing difficulties in elderly adults

Abstract: Background: The function of the sensory systems decreases in the elderly. This may negatively impact the person's performance and independence in daily living. Most studies refer to the decrease in specific modalities and to sensory acuity rather than to general sensory processing in all modalities. Moreover, there is a lack of evaluation tools that focus on these general sensory processing abilities with functional daily life perspective in the elderly population. “…Indeed, adequate sensory-processing abilities are necessary for maintaining positive interactions and relationships with others, understanding the world, and adjusting to changes in the physical and social environment (Ouwehand, de Ridder, & Bensing, 2007). These findings may explain why aging’s negative impact on sensory-processing abilities affects health status and quality of life (Anstey, Luszcz, Giles, & Andrews, 2001; Engel-Yeger, 2013; Spirduso, Francis, & MacRae, 2005). Although sensory-processing dysfunction among older persons may significantly reduce occupational engagement and participation, the knowledge about the relationship among these factors is still lacking, mainly with respect to the restrictions as expressed in daily life.…”
