Measuring mental health literacy – a review of scale-based measures

Abstract: There are substantial limitations in current ability to measure MHL and there is significant scope for the development and evaluation of psychometrically robust measures that assess the relevant attributes of MHL. Further research could also focus on the adequacy of the current definition of MHL.

“…According to Jorm et al, MHL consists of seven attributes: the ability to recognise specific disorders; knowing how to seek mental health information; knowledge of risk factors and causes; knowledge of self-treatments; knowledge of professional help available; and attitudes that promote recognition and appropriate help-seeking. Although MHL has provided a useful way of conceptualising factors that impact on maintenance of mental health, there are methodological limitations to the measurement of this construct and no existing measure that assesses all attributes of MHL in a scale-based format (O'Connor et al, 2014). …”

“…The Journal of Mental Health traditionally encourages and supports research in applied psychometrics (Cao et al, 2016;Fitzgerald et al, 2017;Lloyd & Devine, 2012;O'Connor et al, 2014;Roncalli et al, 2013, among others). This special issue adds to this effort and presents a variety of different research scenarios often occurring in applied psychometrics.…”
