Measuring medical students' motivation to learning anatomy by cadaveric dissection

Abstract: Motivation and learning are inter-related. It is well known that motivating learners is clearly a complex endeavor, which can be influenced by the educational program and the learning environment. Limited research has been conducted to examine students' motivation as a method to assess the effectiveness of dissection in medical education. This study aimed to assess and analyze students' motivation following their dissection experience. A 29-item survey was developed based on the Attention, Relevance, Confidenc… Show more

“…The Traditionalists, also referred to as the “Silent Generation” are described as being dedicated and conventional individuals who regard health care as a vocation rather than just a job (Augustin, ; de Paiva et al, ). They often remain longer in health care practice to be able to teach and share their knowledge and skills with younger generations (Joshi et al, ; Keister et al, ; Pape et al, ), and tend to focus on the process of education rather than its direct outcomes (Evans and Cuffe, ; Abdel Meguid and Khalil, ). Although most Traditionalists have now retired (Fleming and Baume, ), a significant number are still employed in health care as active clinicians and health policymakers (Ezell et al, ; Christensen et al, ), and many are founders of modern academic departments (Yilmaz et al, ).…”

“…The online environment already exerts great influence on education, and present‐day students prefer easily accessible technological options for learning (Tanaka et al, ; Croffoot et al, ; Lysak et al, ). However, providing such options to students is often challenging for educators (Puertas et al, ; Shatto and Erwin, ), as many lack the motivation (Cook and Artino, ; Abdel Meguid and Khalil, ) or technological expertise (Ommering and Dekker, ; Luthar, ) to incorporate these tools in their teaching repertoire.…”

“…Overall, the student perceptions of learning anatomy using the CL jigsaw method were positive in key areas related to motivation, namely, effective knowledge attainment, peer and group learning and enjoyment (Ryan and Deci, ; Vasan et al, ; Maurer et al, ; Abdel Meguid and Khalil, ). It would be worthwhile for future studies to investigate how student‐led learning approaches within a CL framework influence students’ intrinsic motivation to learn anatomy.…”
