Measuring medical and nursing students' attitudes toward AIDS.

Abstract: Investigated attitudes toward AIDS patients among medical and nursing students. Two separate cohorts of students (total N = 550) were surveyed to examine and then validate with confirmatory factor analysis the latent factor structure of such attitudes. Results indicate that a three-factor structure representing fear of contagion, negative emotions, and professional resistance provides a good fit to the data (goodness-of-fit index [GFI] = .92, parsimonious GFI = .67). We offer the resulting 15-item AIDS Attitud… Show more

“…They only think of bacteria and viruses when they hear the term 'microorganism,' and they have certain misconceptions. Many studies appear to be specific and are focused on the knowledge, attitudes, cognitive structures or perceptions of students about bacteria and viruses, instead of the more general concept of microorganisms (Bliwise et al 1991;Brook, 1999;Kurt and Ekici, 2013a;Kurt and Ekici, 2013b;Mathews et al 1990;Maxted, 1984;Simonneaux, 2000). This study aims to help determine the extent of students' learning about microorganisms and examine the place of this subject in their curriculum.…”

“…The AIDS Attitude Scale was developed by Bliwise et al (1991) and implemented on medicine and nursing students. 7 The scale is a likert scale that includes 15 items and is graded 1 to 6. Bliwise et al (1991), calculated the test-retest coefficient as r=0.92 and the internal consistency coefficient as µ =0.86.…”

“…This scale consisted of three subscales-fear of contagion (items 1-5, scores ranging 5-30), negative feelings (items 6-9, scores 4-24), and professional resistance (items 10-15, scores 6-36). Higher total and subscale scores indicated a negative attitude toward PLWH (19). Cronbach's alpha was 073 in terms of the reliability of the study group.…”

“…Specificity and reliability studies of the AIDS Attitude Scale developed by Bliwise et al (1991) were completed by Çimen et al (2005) in Turkey. This AIDS Attitude Scale adapted from English to Turkish could be applied to all health workers and students to determine their attitudes toward PLWH (19,20).…”
