Measuring Leadership Practices of Nurses Using the Leadership Practices Inventory

Abstract: The three-factor solution is advocated for use in nursing research because of the strong psychometric properties, lighter respondent burden, and decrease in research costs, as compared with the traditional five-factor solution. When used as an educational tool, the five-factor LPI may be preferred because it may be more useful for examining a greater number of leadership behaviors.

“…Organizations undertaking leadership development training could also benefit from research that analyzes pre-and post-training. With respect to the LPI survey instrument (Kouzes & Posner, 2013), Tourangeau and McGilton (2004) encouraged revision of the LPI to shorten its length for use in health care to relieve participant burden as well as decrease research costs. Subjectively, participants in this study commented on the length of the survey, and some participants did not complete the survey because they did not feel they had the time or could leave their work.…”

“…It has proven construct validity for groups in nursing, teaching, educational leadership, and law enforcement, despite significant changes in the business environment over the past decades [65][66][67][68][69][70]. Research on the leadership practices for a sample of Canadian women engineers revealed an ease with valuing relationships across cultures, disciplines, and the many domains business, health, and government that engineering touches [45].…”
