In the turbulent construction market, the knowledge management process (KMP) is one of the most valuable tools of sustainability to help construction companies deal with dynamic changes and enhance their construction competitiveness (CC). To effectively utilize KMP in construction, this study aims to explore the interrelationships between key KMP factors and their influences on the CC, utilizing the structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. The objectives include extracting key KMP factors necessary for the CC enhancement, identifying direct and indirect relationships between the KMP and CC factors, and developing a self-assessment form to assist construction companies in evaluating their KMP performance and planning for long-term improvement. The results show that the five key KMP factors, namely knowledge utilization (KU), knowledge dissemination (KD), knowledge responsiveness (KR), knowledge storage (KS), and knowledge acquisition (KA), have direct and indirect effects on CC and that the feedback of CC is sent back to KMP factors for continuous improvement. The KU factor is crucial for short-term improvement. Construction companies should utilize stakeholders’ current practices and experiences to solve problems, conclude lessons learned, and pinpoint practices for future uses. The KS factor, on the other hand, should be emphasized for long-term plans to enhance KMP implementation and CC achievements. A long-term investment plan should be initiated in the database system to properly and effectively implement digital transformation in the 4.0 Era. The self-assessment form developed from the study results assists construction companies in assessing their KMP implementation and planning for sustainable development.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to figure out the paths about transformation of tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge, i.e. tacit knowledge explicating (TKE) in real estate companies, and determine the influencing factors of TKE in Chinese real estate companies to enable enterprises make better use of their knowledge resources.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted an exploratory design method using thematic analysis and grounded theory, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. The interviewees consisted of employees in different positions, who come from Chinese real estate companies with different ranking ranges and different knowledge management levels. Data collection was divided into two rounds for the identification of transformation paths and influencing factors.FindingsThis study has shown that 11 paths about TKE divided into solidified organization process and construction of organizational infrastructure go into effect within the real estate companies. Factors influencing TKE in real estate companies concern three main categories: organizational distal factors, contextual proximal factors and individual factors, including 21 subordinates in total. Furthermore, correlation between TKE paths and influencing factors is established.Research limitations/implicationsResearch results may lack generalizability due to the method adopted. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to verify the outcomes of this research.Practical implicationsThis research provides a new idea and solutions for the tacit knowledge management in real estate companies.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to systematically identify paths and the influencing factors of TKE in real estate companies, contribute to the incipient but growing understanding of achievement of “tacit to explicit” and enrich the corporate tacit knowledge management literature.

Purpose Over the past years, many studies have explored the role of knowledge management (KM) in companies. KM is concerned with the measurement of knowledge to manage knowledge efficiently. On the other hand, the intangible nature of knowledge makes its measurement challenging. Furthermore, there is no standardized method to measure knowledge, and it is chiefly measured based on the subjective judgment of researchers. Moreover, New Product Development (NPD) departments in many companies strive to assess their knowledge in terms of company products and knowledge workers. Hence, this study aims to propose a product-based two-phase technique that measures the company knowledge inventory. Design/methodology/approach In the first phase, the value of knowledge is quantified relative to products, knowledge workers and the entire company using two concepts of knowledge width and depth. Then, a three-dimensional knowledge asset map (knowledge, products and knowledge worker dimensions) is designed to assess and audit knowledge workers. Finally, this technique recruits an integer linear programming model with a cost minimization objective function to optimize the supply of NPD knowledge requirements in the second phase. Findings This model enables managers to determine what type of knowledge can be supplied by existing knowledge workers, whether within the company or by other external sources. Originality/value Among existing knowledge measurement methods, only a few use a product-based measuring technique. However, they fail to offer suitable scenarios for managers' decision-making process and consider cost structures in measurement techniques. Hence, this paper attempts to overcome these drawbacks.
