Background: the Peripheral IV cannula is one of the most frequently used medical devices in the world; to give intravenous therapy with drugs, and blood components is indispensable in today’s health care.Objective: is to assessing nurses' knowledge towards IV cannula insertion.Methods: Descriptive, hospital- based study, was conducted in Sana'a city in university of science and technology hospital, republican educational hospital, Kuwait educational hospital and Saudi German hospital from June2018 to September 2018, study covered all nurse's in hospital they were (100) nurses, the data were presented in pre- designed questionnaire firstly, then collected by direct interview by participants. Result: The results found a total of nurses have moderate knowledge about IV cannula insertion and indication of insertion (100%), also and about (63.5%) have ability to control in infection before, during and after cannula insertion, the study showed that more than half (71.7%) have good knowledge about site insertion of I.V cannula. Conclusion: The study recommended that regular program to discuss problems that faced them during cannula insertion. Such as lack of general information, not the rehabilitation of nurses scientifically, lack in training courses of nurses and not to evaluate the skills of nurses periodically. Recommendation: The nurses need to be trained, education and conducting courses how to care and maintenance of IV cannula.

IntroductionInserting, monitoring and maintaining intravenous access are essential components of nursing. We evaluated simulation training on a manikin to improve cannulation skills.MethodsNursing staff managing paediatric patients were asked to cannulate NITA Newborn-1800 manikin before and after appropriate training. Skills were assessed by a single assessor using an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) checklist. Four steps were identified as critical. A score of 8/10 (80%) was considered satisfactory. Knowledge was assessed by 10 questions. A training module consisting of theoretical aspects, PowerPoint presentations, videos and hands on training over a manikin was conducted. Post-training assessment was done 1 week later.ResultsSeventy-five (80.6%) nurses who completed preassessments and postassessments were assessed for paired comparisons of knowledge and skill. The majority of the nurses were females, had contractual appointment, were in their early career phase and from the paediatric wards. The mean (SD) post-training knowledge score was greater vis-a-vis pretraining score (7.52 (1.58) vs 5.32 (1.57), P<0.001). A similar result was observed for total OSCE scores (9.22 (0.66) vs 7.91 (1.11), P<0.001). Significantly higher proportion of participants exhibited intravenous cannulation satisfactorily after the training vis-a-vis pretraining assessment (69 (92%) vs 36 (48%), P<0.001).ConclusionTraining using manikin showed improvement in post-training score of intravenous cannulation skill of paediatric nurses; however, this finding needs further confirmation by a randomised control trial, as our study does not have a control group.

Objective. The objective of this review was to compare traditional intravenous (IV) insertion instructional methods with the use of haptic IV simulators. Design. An integrative research design was used to analyze the current literature. Data Sources. A search was conducted using key words intravenous (IV) insertion or cannulation or venipuncture and simulation from 2000 to 2015 in the English language. The databases included Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, Education Resource Information Center, and Medline. Review Methods. Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) strategies were used to critique the articles for themes and similarities. Results. Comparisons of outcomes between traditional IV instructional methods and the use of haptic IV simulators continue to show various results. Positive results indicate that the use of the haptic IV simulator decreases both band constriction and total procedure time. While students are satisfied with practicing on the haptic simulators, they still desire faculty involvement. Conclusion. Combining the haptic IV simulator with practical experience on the IV arm may be the best practice for learning IV insertion. Research employing active learning strategies while using a haptic IV simulator during the learning process may reduce cost and faculty time.
