“…Much research suggests that those with stronger NMRE cope better with stress. Also, NMRE was modestly correlated with social desirability for Japanese women (Mearns et al, ), such that it may affect the tendency to get social support. By adding personality variables into the path model, further studies can assess influences of long‐standing traits and ER on social functioning.…”

“…In both Germany and the United States, enhancement of NMRE early in cognitive‐behavioural therapy predicts better outcome (Backenstrass et al, ; Cloitre et al, ). Stronger NMRE are associated with less physical and psychological distress in South America, China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea (e.g., Mearns, Park, & Catanzaro, ; Mearns et al, ; Pfeiffer et al, ). For example, NMRE buffered the relationship between childhood maltreatment and symptoms of distress in Japan (Tresno, Ito, & Mearns, ), paralleling Mearns and Mauch ().…”

“…Research findings in Japan and Korea parallel findings in the West: Stronger NMRE are associated with more positive affect, fewer symptoms of psychopathology and less physical and psychological distress in the form of depression and anxiety (Mearns, Park, & Catanzaro, ; Mearns et al, ). Tresno, Ito, and Mearns () found that NMRE moderated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and later self‐injury in a sample of Japanese college students.…”

“…An interesting cultural note is that the final 32‐items of the NMR‐C more closely resemble the American NMR scale than they do the Japanese version. Although we translated into Chinese all items that Mearns et al () devised for the Japanese scale, during item selection, almost all items pertaining to social obligation were discarded due to their low item‐whole correlations. Although China and Japan are both Asian countries, which are presumed to value interdependence, our findings highlight differences between the two countries in the extent to which mood regulation is a social obligation.…”
