“…First, we do not have full neuropsychological testing for our large sample, and thus cannot provide formal diagnoses of MCI or dementia. However, we used a well-tested survey adaptation of a screening tool, the MoCA-SA, 28,39 as well as appropriate cutoffs for a community sample. [42][43][44] A sensitivity analysis utilizing both a continuous cognitive measure and multiple different cutoffs yielded similar associations with social variables (data available on request).…”

“…38 Following extensive testing, an 18-item survey adaptation of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-SA) was included in NSHAP-W2. 28 The MoCA-SA was designed for administration by nonmedical personnel and to reduce respondent burden within the context of a large, time-limited national survey, while preserving the MoCA's sensitivity to a range of cognitive abilities. MoCA-SA scores are highly correlated with the MoCA and scores can be accurately converted into MoCA scores.…”

“…The NESARC-III sample is nationally representative [46], large enough to conduct factor analysis in random sample halves, covers a broader age range than previous general population samples with cognition measures [3135], and includes measures for a range of substances. The two self-reported scales, which offer the advantages of fast, efficient cognitive data collection [44], were supported by discriminant and construct validation.…”

“…Extant surveys with measures of substance use and cognitive functioning included only middle-aged or older U.S. adults [30–35], omitting late adolescent and early adult participants, when prevalence of alcohol and drug use and related disorders is highest [3638]. Thus, in large, national samples with participants at the peak ages of risk, information is lacking on the relationship of cognitive functioning to substance use, an increasing health problem with high morbidity and mortality among adults [36,37,39].…”
