Measuring Clinical Productivity in Community‐Based Dental Education Programs

Abstract: Community-based dental education programs (CBDEPs) are an important part of the curriculum in many dental schools. This article describes the redesign of the CBDEP at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. As part of the formative evaluation of this CBDEP, information on clinical productivity was collected in order to educate intramural faculty members about the scope and extent of services provided in extramural sites; develop an understanding of the productivity expected; complement the intramural … Show more

“…Approximately half of the dental procedures provided by students at OHIO Project facilities were restorative or oral surgery procedures and the other half were diagnostic or preventive procedures. This proportion of dental procedures is consistent with other community‐based dental programs . Because one third of all procedures were basic restorative procedures (i.e., fillings) and one fifth were oral surgery procedures, this evidence reinforces the existence of the oral health crisis and the disparity in access to oral healthcare.…”

“…Due to the limited types of dental procedures compensated by third‐party means, the sustainability of these extramural community‐based opportunities becomes the responsibility of the dental programs . Evidence has documented the significant contributions of dental students’ clinical productivity to the community‐based dental facilities in the form of increased production and decreased wait time for dental treatment . Sustainable models of community‐based dental education include fundraising, developing an outreach clinical model, and creating revenue‐sharing clinical models .…”

“…Like many U.S. dental schools over the last 25 years, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry has employed various clinical curricula to ensure students obtain adequate clinical experience and attain required competencies for graduation. Dental schools have introduced such innovative curriculum and assessment formats as comprehensive care, 1 6 case completion, 7 , 8 competency examinations, 9 12 portfolios, 13 , 14 and community‐based, off‐campus externships 15 17 . UCSF has had three major clinical curricular changes since 1992, moving from a discipline‐based curriculum to a comprehensive care curriculum to a procedural requirement curriculum plus externships.…”

“…Four studies compared student productivity in community settings to that in dental school clinics, 14 17 and five studies compared productivity in a dental school across a number of years 14 , 15 , 18 20 . Three studies compared productivity across different populations and/or community sites 16 18 and two studies across rotations 21 , 22 . A sole study included a review of dentists’ self‐reported data about the non‐clinical information they solicited from older patients and their exposure to this population in dental school 23 .…”
