“…Carers often make subtle judgments about the 'costs and benefits' of support (Clarke, 1999;Montgomery & Kosloski, 2000) and reject help if the former are seen to outweigh the latter. Fundamentally, carers need to see support as relevant to their perceived needs and appropriate to their situation before they will consider using it (Bear, Griffin, Saver, & Milspaugh, 1999;Braithwaite, 2000;Clyburn, Stones, Hadjistauropoulous, & Tuckko, 2000;Montgomery, Marquis et al, 2002;Pickard, 1999). Subsequently, any help offered has to be of a quality consistent with carers' standards (Bamford & Bruce, 2000;Briggs & Askham, 1998;Josephsson, Bäckman, Nygärd, & Borrell, 2000;Pickard, 1999) and provided by staff in whom they have confidence and trust (Jansson, Almberg, Grafström, & Winblad, 1998;Parahoo, Campbell, & Scoltook, 2002;Starns, Karner, & Montgomery, 2002).…”
