“…Because of the limited amount of research about BIM in SMEs, this study adopted a methodology comprising an in-depth and comprehensive review. The review was undertaken in five steps, as adopted from Lu et al (2018), namely: (1) select the data source; (2) perform the preliminary search; (3) filter BIM application papers; (4) focus on the uptake and application of BIM by SMEs in the AEC industry and (5) identify research articles. This also allowed identification of critical and appropriate attributes including the general trend of existing ECAM 29,1 literature, lessons learnt from BIM practical implementation, enabling technologies of BIM applications and BIM-induced organisational outcomes.…”

“…Therefore, on the flip side, it can be argued that having appropriate processes and ECAM 29,1 people with skills could act as a catalyst or driver for BIM implementation. However, there needs to be a fair balance of processes across the project, organisation and industry levels, for BIM to be successful (Lu et al, 2018).…”

“…China Construction Industry (2013) reported that BIM adoption level in China is very low; this is however attributed to government not acting as "role model" in the adoption of BIM. In Hong Kong, Lu et al (2018) found that BIM maturities of construction-related organizations in Hong Kong vary, with more than half ranging from Stage 0 to 1; and this was attributed to the different developments of their BIM processes and protocols. However, the BIM implementation in Africa differs from one country to another.…”

“…A recent model, called a multifunctional BIM MM [32], focuses on BIM maturity in projects, organizations and industry in general, covering measurements across three domains: technology, process and protocol, which are organised in a hierarchical pyramid with sub-domains. This model was later applied in a Hong Kong context in BIM implementation projects from a specific vendor [34] It should be noted that the most widely used national professional organisation-driven assessment tools include NBIMS-CMM in the United States [35] and the UK BIM maturity model, both of which are simple and easily understood by stakeholders [28]. The UK BIM model was later applied in developing countries, such as Nigeria [36], despite the unknown validity of the results.…”

“…The BIM proficiency matrix (BPM) [29] was developed at an academic institution and has been criticised for a lack of compression due to its heavy focus on the technical aspects of BIM implementation rather than process and protocol [34]. The Arup's BIM maturity measure [35] was developed by a world-leading professional services firm to assess the BIM maturity of projects.…”
