Measuring bilingual language dominance: An examination of the reliability of the Bilingual Language Profile

Abstract: Measuring language dominance, broadly defined as the relative strength of each of a bilingual’s two languages, remains a crucial methodological issue in bilingualism research. While various methods have been proposed, the Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) has been one of the most widely used tools for measuring language dominance. While previous studies have begun to establish its validity, the BLP has yet to be systematically evaluated with respect to reliability. Addressing this methodological gap, the curren… Show more

“…Looking at the broader range of bilingualism research, there are two psychometrically strong language background self-rating instruments: the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q, Marian et al, 2007) and Bilingual Language Profile (BLP, Birdsong et al, 2012). Both instruments have demonstrated internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity (Bonvin, Brugger, & Berthele, 2023;Marian et al, 2007;Olson, 2023). Scores from both instruments have been shown to explain bilingual performance in various other language and cognitive domains (e.g., Vincente et al, 2019;Whitford & Titone, 2012).…”

“…Our first guideline is that language assessment of BPWA should integrate information about premorbid language background with standardized language testing (in both languages). To gather information on language background we recommend using one of the two psychometrically validated questionnaires, Bilingual Language Profile (Birdsong et al, 2012) or Bilingual Code-Switching Profile (Olson, 2023). For standardized language testing, we recommend the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised (Kertesz, 2008) and its Spanish version (Gonzalez et al, 2021) given their psychometric data and ROMA recommendations (Wallace et al, 2018).…”

“…The measure of language dominance, age of acquisition and patterns of language use in the study was the Bilingual Language Profile (BLP), a questionnaire which encompasses the data on the participants' linguistic practices with information on the extra-linguistic factors conditioning their language use (Birdsong et al 2012;Olson 2023). The BLP contained four blocks of questions: language history, language use, language proficiency and language attitudes.…”
